Since 2016, the Technoparc, wetlands and green spaces sector north of Montreal PET / YUL international airport has been visited thousands of times by bird watchers, photographers and hikers. And by some, long before that.
-
Since then, everyone has been impressed by the density and variety of the local biodiversity. It is people who love nature who formed the TechnoparcOiseaux group in 2016.
-
The important ecological value and the great biodiversity of the places make it an exceptionally wild place in the heart of Montreal.
-
In the language of ornithologists, this place is recognized as being the best “Hot Spot” for bird watching on the Island of Montreal.
-
However, these places are in peril in the face of the mechanical shovels of the economic development of the Borough of Saint-Laurent and ADM in Dorval.
-
Since then, volunteers from TechnoparOiseaux and La Coalition Verte have fought several battles with the different levels of government involved, which has had the effect of slowing down their imminent destruction.
-
But, this sanctuary is still coveted by speculators and real estate developers who want to sell “Offices with a view of the Water”!
-
We have won battles and lost others, but the job is not done. We have a lot of work to do. No one can give up!
-
We must sit down with all those involved in this issue, which has serious consequences for nature. We want many amendments to be made to existing laws which do not sufficiently protect nature and which rather promote economic development .
-
We must, collectively, change the mentality of municipalities towards the way we treat the environment. Local governments, town halls, have great power over the use of their land. The provincial government of Quebec has great legislative power.
-
Quebec's “Regulation respecting compensation for damage to wetlands and bodies of water” is, in our opinion, a document that must undergo major revisions. This government decree makes it possible to build on wetlands while compensating for their destruction, when, on the contrary, their destruction must be effectively prevented.
